Salisbury, in the mid-south of Wiltshire, is an ancient cathedral city, the only city within the county borders. Its history goes back over a thousand years, with origins that can be traced thousands of years further back. It is not surprising therefore that it has many points of  historical interest, and is close to many other historic sites.

Stonehenge is a world famous prehistoric monument, dating back thousands of years, was begun in 2800BC. It is sited on Salisbury Plain,10 miles to the north of Salisbury.

With the tallest spire in England, reaching a height of 404 feet, the Cathedral at Salisbury is amongst the most beautiful in the world. It is visible on every approach to the City, some of the best views being from the hills to the east and south of the city. Building commenced in 1220 and is almost entirely in the early English style although the upper part of the tower and spire are of the later, Decorated period.

As well as many interesting Tudor streets and shops, some medieval gothic architecture has also survived in Salisbury. This dates back to the earliest times of the city, the time of the construction of the Cathedral itself.  A good example of this is the Poultry Cross (left) standing incongruously at the end of Fish Row. This is part of the medieval street market that still flourishes in Salisbury on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Here was where traditionally stalls concentrating in fowl would be set up. Other sites include the cheese market (now part of the city library) and the city wall, as well as the cathedral itself of course.
