Far from being a tired old Victorian resort Weymouth has much to offer from it's heritage heartland - The port has a recorded history of use dating back over 1900 years to the Romans.  Evidence shows that Roman Galleys sailed up the River Wey as far as Radipole where they unloaded cargo for transport to the Roman Town of Durnovaria (Dorchester).

More recently, over 200 years ago King George III made Weymouth into a fashionable holiday resort by his regular visits.

The Coat of Arms of the Weymouth

Weymouth's crowning glory is its award-winning beach. The impressive sweep of the Georgian seafront houses a wide variety of hotels, restaurants and pubs, cafes and large shops, small character shops and a new town shopping centre. The Jubilee Clock was built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887 and serves as a very fine landmark for Weymouth.

There are many coastal walks around Weymouth and Portland or just a short drive into the surrounding countryside to visit some of the many memorable locations, visit  Lawrence of Arabia's House or the written and filmed about Thomas Hardy Countryside with the beautiful scenery as seen in the film "Far From The Madding Crowd".

The Seafront at Weymouth - The Esplanade

A local charter of 1252 mentions the Port of Weymouth and in 1347 it supplied 15 ships and 263 mariners for the siege of Calais. During the 15th Century it prospered partly as a result of a substantial trade in pilgrims sailing to Spain.
A dispute as to the ownership of the harbour was settled by the amalgamation of the two towns adjoining the harbour, Weymouth and Melcombe Regis, in 1571.

The Harbour and Quayside at Weymouth

During the Second World War Weymouth played an active part in the support
of D-Day and the invasion of Normandy operations.  The Harbour became the entry port for the whole population of Alderney as the island was completely evacuated on 23rd June 1940 because of the German invasion of the Channel Islands.
